Dr. Bharti Kashyap

It is often said that when unwavering determination meets a spirit of service, history is made. Dr Bharti Kashyap is one of such extraordinary personalities in the fields of medicine and social service, who has dispelled darkness from the lives of millions and brought them a new ray of hope. Recipient of the Nari Shakti Puraskar, India's highest civilian honour for women, conferred by the President of India, Dr Bharti Kashyap has also been felicitated with several national honours from the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
In Jharkhand and across India's medical fraternity, Dr Kashyap is known by two highly respected titles -- "Vision Lady" and “Cervical Cancer Crusader”. Dr Kashyap earned the distinction of “Vision Lady” in 1996 when she created history by facilitating the first posthumous eye donation and successful corneal transplant in the then undivided Bihar-Jharkhand region. She further strengthened this mission by establishing the region's first active eye bank-the Kashyap Memorial Eye Bank-in 2002.
Since then, the Kashyap Memorial Eye Bank has performed the highest number of corneal transplants in the state, with 1,102 successful corneal transplant surgeries to its credit. In addition, nearly 2.5 million government schoolchildren have benefited from free eye examinations, spectacles and cataract surgeries, bringing the light of vision-and with it, the promise of education—into countless young lives.
